At a time when the debates which\u00a0<\/span>stir society\u00a0emphasize\u00a0how much femininity is made of many and diverse figures, these words issued from the English\u00a0psychoanalyst have lost none of their lustre.\u00a0By making femininity\u00a0and masquerade equivalent, she\u00a0\u00a0 indicates that the former is not\u00a0a given and\u00a0if, according to Freud,\u00a0the little girl\u00a0\u201cturned\u00a0into a\u00a0little\u00a0woman\u201d, she does so\u00a0only\u00a0through wearing\u00a0a mask.\u00a0For all that,femininity is not made superficial but becomes a\u00a0construction in the singular. The mask of femininity is thus\u00a0<\/i>a mask of nothing<\/i>, encountered in this empty space of\u00a0the non-existence of\u00a0Woman,\u00a0and if there is something\u00a0\u201cartificial\u201d\u00a0\u00a0in this mask it is in the first sense of the\u00a0term, of what is not natural butself-made, a singular contrivance. This is exactly what Joan Riviere testified to since her words are derived from the case she has built, her own, which she has disguised to make it public.
